If you’ve landed on this post, chances are you’ve found yourself with a layover at Denver International Airport (DIA). Instead of twiddling your thumbs or scrolling mindlessly through social media, why not take advantage of that extra time? As a frequent flyer, I've gathered some helpful tips, and I'll let you in on the best ways to survive (and even enjoy) your time at DIA. Grab a snack, and read on...

  1. Explore the Art Installations

Did you know that DIA is home to one of the most extensive airport art collections in the country? That's right! From the iconic blue Mustang (yes, the one with glowing red eyes) to stunning murals and sculptures, there’s enough art here to have you snapping pics for your Instagram feed. Take a leisurely stroll through the terminals and appreciate the local talent on display. It’s a great way to stretch your legs and enjoy the unique vibe of Denver.

  1. Indulge in Local Brews and Bites

If you’ve got a few hours to kill, why not treat yourself to some delicious food? Great Divide Brewing Co. and Tivoli Tap House showcase some of the best local flavors you’ll find inside DIA.

At Tivoli Tap House in the Jeppesen Terminal, you can experience a touch of Colorado brewing history inspired by the original Tivoli brewery dating back to 1859. Enjoy award-winning beers brewed on-site alongside flatbreads, craft burgers, and specialty cocktails. You can’t go wrong with a sweet potato nacho platter or a craft beer while you’re at it. Remember, enjoying a good meal is one of the best layover travel tips!

  1. Lounge Like a Boss

If your layover is on the longer side, consider spending some time in one of the airport lounges. You don’t have to be flying first class to access these serene spaces, as many offer day passes. Treat yourself to a quiet environment where you can relax, grab some food and drinks, and use free Wi-Fi. Here is a list of all the lounges you can choose from. It’s a small investment for a much more pleasant layover experience.

  1. Shop for Local Souvenirs

DIA is not all about the hustle and bustle of travel; it also offers a variety of shops that celebrate the essence of Colorado. From artisanal soaps to handmade jewelry, you’ll find unique souvenirs that’ll remind you of your trip. Picking up a little something for yourself or a loved one can make your layover a lot more enjoyable. Trust me, no one ever regretted a cool t-shirt or a novelty mug.

  1. Take a Quick Trip into Denver

If your layover is particularly long (think over 6 hours), you might be able to sneak in a quick visit to downtown Denver. With a short ride on the A-Line train from the airport, you can be in the heart of the city in under 30 minutes. Wander around Union Station by yourself or join a Denver Free Walking Tour so you can explore more of Downtown Denver. Just remember to keep an eye on the time and leave plenty of room to get back to the airport. This is one of my favorite layover travel tips!

  1. Get Your Steps In

Let’s get a little active! If you’re feeling the need to stretch your legs, DIA offers walking routes that can help you hit your daily step goal while you wait. They have signs to guide you through the terminals, and even some space ot walk outside. It’s a great way to burn off some calories before your next flight. Who knew navigating an airport could double as a mini workout?

  1. Catch Up on Your Reading

Travel downtime is the perfect opportunity to catch up on that novel or article you've been meaning to read. Forgot to pack a book? No problem! Browse the selection at one of the airport bookstores or check out newspapers in the stalls nearby. Pair your reading with a great cup of coffee, settle into a comfortable seat, and enjoy a relaxing break before your journey continues. To get started, visit either Tattered Cover Book Store or Hudson News. Use the link here to find the location nearest to you.

  1. Recharge Your Devices

With all the excitement of travel, it’s easy to forget about your devices. While you’re at DIA, make sure to utilize the many charging stations available. You’ll find them throughout the terminals, so whether you’re flying solo or with family, you can keep your phones and tablets powered up and ready to go.

  1. Free Wi-Fi Access

Let’s be real: we live in a digital age, and staying connected is more crucial than ever. Lucky for you, DIA offers free Wi-Fi! Use the time to catch up on emails, FaceTime with family, or binge-watch that show you’ve been missing. Just be sure to find a comfortable spot to park it for a while!

  1. Unwind in a Quiet Space

Need to unwind after navigating the hustle and bustle of the airport? The Rest and Recharge area on the Concourse A mezzanine offers a peaceful retreat where you can relax before your flight. Featuring comfortable seating and recliners, this quiet space is generally calmer than the busy concourse, making it ideal for a quick nap, meditation, gentle stretching, or simply enjoying a few moments of silence. You can also unplug—or charge your devices—while resting your eyes and recharging both your body and mind before takeoff.

You can survive layovers and extra time while you are at Denver International Airport; lots of people do it daily. Just take the time exploring, indulging, or simply relaxing, as DIA has plenty of options to keep you occupied. Next time you're faced with a layover, remember that it can be an opportunity rather than just a waiting game.
